Pair Victorian Novelty Silver & Nephrite Golf Club Propelling Pencil & Dip Pen

Frank Hyams, London c1900
Photo 1 of 12

A good quality late Victorian or early 20th century pair of novelty silver mounted nephrite Propelling Pencil and Dip Pen, made in the form of Golf Clubs (a driver and a long iron). Realistically modeled and carved, the propelling pencil extending from the handle of the driver with a twist mechanism. The dip pen with steel nib.

Marked with French silver import marks.

Probably made by Frank Hyams Ltd, of Dunedin in New Zealand, and 128 New Bond Street, London, c1900.

This exact model of Golf Clubs Propelling Pencil and Dip Pen is known by Sampson Mordan & Co, but with silver heads. It is likely that Mordan supplied the blanks to Hyams for mounting with his trademark nephrite (Pounamu).

Literature
Frank Hyams was a jeweller, silversmith, and watchmaker with stores in New Zealand (founded 1885) and London. He specialized in high-end antique jewellery, silverware, watches, and china along with a strong focus on New Zealand greenstone (nephrite). Mr. Hyams had the native greenstone, which was associated with the Maori race from early records, set in antique jewellery and other collectable objects. He was the leading manufacturer and dealer of New Zealand greenstone at the time.
Examples of his work are in the British Museum and Smithsonian.
