A rare George III Provincial silver Armorial Wine Label of plain crescent form, a central peak surmounted by a crest of a swan, incised for Shrub. The crest of ‘a swan, proper, dexter foot on an ogress’, is that of the Clarke family of County Durham.

See: ""Wine Labels 1730-2003"" by John Salter, front cover illustration and fig 749, page 225. Ann Robertson, widow of John Robertson, was active 1801-1811. Her husband had been in partnership with John Langlands I from 1778-1793 when the latter died. Then from 1793-1795 John Robertson was in partnership with Margaret, widow of John Landlands I. John Robertson died in 1801 and, strangely, left his business to an eleven year old nephew! To his wife he left: ‘The household goods, the choice of two cows and an annuity of £100’. Ann obtained powers of administration to run the business until the nephew John came of age. Hence her period of activity was 1801-1811. She was responsible for several unique designs including the plain crescent armorial bearing ‘a swan, proper, dexter foot on an ogress’, the crest of the Clarke family of County Durham.
