Austrian Silver & Enamel Harness Racing Cigarette Case Seaforth Highlanders

An early 20th century Austrian silver Cigarette Case of curved rounded rectangular form with sprung push-button opening mechanism and hinged lid, the face with finely painted inset enamel scene depicting a Standardbred Trotting Horse pulling a Sulky, the driver with blue silks and a red cap. Silver gilt interior.

The reverse engraved with presentation inscription:-

"To 'DG' From his Comrades of the Sergts Mess 1st Sea Hrs" May 1907. For the Seaforth Highlanders Regiment.

Marked with Diana's head mark and makers mark 'S.H'? The clasp stamped with two letter 'A's for Vienna.

Harness racing in Vienna takes place at the Trabrennbahn Krieau (also known as the Krieau Trotting Track). Located in the Leopoldstadt district near the famous Prater amusement park, it is the second-oldest harness racing track in Europe. The Trabrennbahn Krieau (Krieau Trotting Track), also known as the Trabrennplatz, is a horse racing track in the Krieau, a part of Vienna's Leopoldstadt district. The Prater, a large public park, lies immediately to the southwest of the Trabrennbahn Krieau. The Trabrennbahn Krieau opened on 29 September, 1878. The old grandstand and a tower for officials were finished in 1913. The Trabrennbahn Krieau is the second oldest harness racing track in Europe; only the Central Moscow Hippodrome, completed in 1834, is older.
