George III Armorial Silver Wine Label 'Sherry' Talbot Dog

James Hyde, London 1795
Photo 1 of 8

An extremely rare George III Armorial silver Wine Label, made in the form of a family crest depicting a talbot passant ermine, charged with a Tudor rose, standing on a scrolled nameplate incised for Sherry.

By James Hyde (possibly overstriking another) , London 1795.

Previous Armorial Talbot Labels have been attributed to the Talbot family of Malahide, Ireland, but this Talbot Ermine (white) is more likely the crest of the Allington or Bell families of England.

Similar, but later examples, are illustrated in 'Wine Labels 1730-2003', by John Salter, fig 359, page 95 & fig 566, page 158.

An earlier example, also for Sherry, by Richard Binley, London c1760, was sold by Woolley & Wallis of Salisbury on October 18th, 2006, Lot 414, for £3,300 plus buyers premium.
