George III Silver "Two Recumbent Putti" Wine Label 'Claret'

London c1820
Photo 1 of 8

A rare George III large die-stamped silver Wine Label of Bacchanalian form, the shaped oval label with two recumbent putti supporting a scrolled nameplate pierced for Claret, a vine leaf and grape border with a Bacchus Mask Head surmount.

Part marked with George III Duty Mark and Lion Passant only, London, c1820.

Only a handful of these Bacchanalian style Labels have been recorded, including three fully marked examples by William Knight, London 1833. The design is very similar to a set of cast silver labels by Paul Storr, London c1809, that reside in the Royal Collection (See:- 'Wine Labels 1730-2003', edited by John Salter, pages 99-101, fig 386).
