A rare George IV silver Sauce Label of cut-cornered rectangular form with double reeded border, incised for Hartshorn in script lettering.
By W F, London, 1822
HARTSHORN stands for smelling salts, using ammonia as a basic ingredient.
The chief source of ammonia in Regency times was the horn or antler of a hart. This was sliced, then rasped and calcined. In aqueous form the bottle in a travelling box was often labelled SPIRIT or SPIRITS OF HARTSHORN.
