An extremely fine early Victorian cast silver gilt Wine Label made in the form of a large vine leaf with five lobes and thick tendril mount, realistic frosted finish and pierced for MADEIRA. Engraved to the reverse with the crest and coronet of John Scott, 2nd Earl of Eldon.

By Benjamin Smith, London 1838.

*Crest of John, 2nd Earl of Eldon (1805-1854) who became Earl in 1838 and was subsequently declared of unsound mind during January 1853. He was Earl of (Scott), Stowell Park, North Leach, Gloucestershire.

Blazon of crest:
a lion's head erased gu., gorged with a chain, and therefrom a portcullis pendent or, and charged with a mullet arg. for difference.
