A rare Victorian novelty silver six-drawer telescopic Propelling Pencil made in the form of a Plumb Bob or Spinning Top, each section graduated to fit one inside the other when opened or closed. The circular body with reeded decoration and attached suspension ring. One section stamped with a diamond registration mark for the 12th September 1873 and the top stamped Thornhill No 218.

The design application for the Plumb Bob Pencil was made by Walter Thornhill of 144 New Bond Street in 1873.

This design registration mark appears on Pencils carrying either the Thornhill or Sampson Mordan name on top of the cap, each pencil also carries a serial number. Although this was a popular design made in three different sizes it appears more frequently by Sampson Mordan than by Walter Thornhill. This pencil is numbered 218.

In good condition with one tiny shallow dent to the body. The drive pin to extend the lead is present but detached.
