A good Victorian silver Vesta Case of rounded rectangular form with hinged flip-top lid and silver gilt interior, the face enamelled with four maritime signal flags.
By Edmonds & Johnson, London. Also stamped with a Registered Design number and the word ""Errinerung"". Also with retailer's mark of J.H.Werner, Berlin.
"Errinerung"" is a German word meaning memento, remembrance or keepsake.
The four signal flags would have probably have indicated the name of a ship in maritime code (taken from the Commercial Code of flags 1857-1900), probably a German Merchant Ship. The signal flags are for the letters, (D) Delta (O) Oscar, (N) November & (K) Kilo,
